about

Peter Webb (sax, synth) and John Gregg (drums) have been musical cohorts and frequent collaborators in the Atlanta underground since meeting in the winter of 2010, and thereafter contributing to numerous projects around town. Most notably, both have long been involved with the genre-defying experimental collective Faun and a Pan Flute, as well as kaleidoscopic art-rockers Hello Ocho.

As a duo, they are Dachshund. This release captures two live improvisations, each recorded on an iPhone one year apart at intimate spaces in Athens and Atlanta. On display here is the combo's remarkable - dare I say, telepathic - chemistry as performers. Each set builds off a droned synth note before meandering between dusky ambience and percussive maelstrom, resulting in pieces that straddle Coltrane-inspired spiritual jazz, meditative ECM, and German kosmische musik. Just take it from the audience member heard at the close of side B who declares: "I'm crying!".

Yeah, I felt it too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Things kick off with a dreamy/droney In A Silent Way kind of feel, before rolling into slightly freakier zones (shades of Rashied Ali and John Coltrane’s duets?). Webb and Gregg both float around each other wonderfully, occasionally locking into a groove, but mostly keeping things loose and exploratory. I’m into it." Tyler Wilcox, Aquarium Drunkard/Doom and Gloom from the Tomb
"Dachshund is a real treat too, because it combines two things that get the Tab Outers all worked up, that get everybody all sniffy and glaze-eyed like they found the catnip stash: live improv and #jass fusion...I find myself bogarting the catnip with very little intention of sharing. This is all up my alley, and I’m keeping it all for myself."- Ryan Masteller, Tabs Out
"This live recording...does a great job of hitting on several points. The first half owes more than a passing glance to the first 20 seconds or so of John Coltrane’s “Acknowledgement,” but because it never forcefully pushes past this, it retains an unresolved tension throughout its entire 20-minute-plus running time. Though the second half is from a totally different show, it feels very much like a continuation of the first, but with the emotional knob twisted way up. Gregg comes in forcefully here, and Webb’s trills and drones are a warm wrap of thoughtfully cinematic playing. All in all, it’s right on time."- Gordon Lamb, Flagpole Magazine
"Webb and Gregg are tuned into each other as master improvisers are apt to be...The almost spiritual way that the pair change modes – from extremely vigorous to outright melodic and sweet – is captivating." Bryon Hays, Nine Chains to the Moon
"On this pair recordings by Dachshund, there is a feel of soothing felicity. Like watching a distant storm form and move in an amorphous direction... Dachshund has excellent boundaries and never dislodges the listener from their resting place. The combination of drums and sax held on canvas by droning synthesizer is mesmerizing. Great patience and timing, with valid chaos held in hand. As these sonic currents move into audible range and energize those who listen, sounds precede on, leaving consciousnesses refreshed."- Lost in a Sea of Sound
